Dear Parishioners,
St. John’s Parish has completed their 9th Annual Vacation Bible School. Three years ago a very special group of volunteers that loved the message that VBS sends to our Children formed a VBS Committee and together we start planning in January for this wonderful week. These wonderful volunteers have done a great job and I thank them.
We had over 70 teenagers nurture, love and share God’s Love with our campers. These teenagers’ willingness to come to spend an entire week with either 5 elementary age children or one very special pre-school age child is amazing.
Together the teenagers and campers learned that no matter who you are, what happens, how someone treats you, how you feel or where you are…trust God.
My two favorite illustrations of how much our faith becomes visible during this week is the story of Joseph and Ryan and our picnic. Joseph and his family have joined us for several years and they came in to the CCD office just a few days before VBS started to register. We had a long talk about how excited he was, he loved the decorations but mostly he wanted to let me know what kind of crew leader he wanted. I intentionally paired him up with a young man named Ryan, whom I did not personally know that well, but has a wonderful, caring reputation. Joseph let me know by the close of the first day that I made a perfect match~ Ryan was awesome! I absolutely loved watching these two all week. The two had a very special week together. My second favorite illustration was a surprise I received at the picnic on Friday. It was a hot day and the kids had decided to have fun with water instead of playing volleyball. Out of the corner of my eye I caught Dave, a very special young man, holding a bucket of water with the entire camp in toe behind him smiling wildly at me. I started to run, but there was no hope, a cold bucket of water was dumped on my head and at that moment it felt like an ocean of God’s love. In both stories these teenagers, children and even I felt comfortable enough at St. John’s to let go of any fears and just Trust God. In doing so, the feeling of God’s love will become a memory that will last a lifetime.
During the week of VBS our teenagers, adults, and campers have the opportunity to experience the beauty of God’s love and the Grace that each one of us has inside of us that is meant to be shared with one another.
Many of our kids are counting the years until they can be crew leaders! The Kingdom will Rock next year at our 10th Annual Vacation Bible School.
Thank-you St. John’s for your support of this very special program.
Nancy Smith
